Introducing The DeLorme Earthmate PN-20 Waterproof Hiking GPS

When you go out hiking in the woods one of the last things that you want to do is end up getting lost. However, getting lost can and does happen at times and when this does happen you often want to try to find your way home. This is when you should know more information about the DeLorme Earthmate PN-20 waterproof hiking GPS and how it is going to help you in avoiding getting lost. With that being said, we are going to cover some of the features of the GPS, the pros, the cons, the different price factors, but even the final thoughts we have on this unit. So make sure you read on to get the full review of the product.

Features Of The DeLorme Earthmate PN-20

  •  Holds up to ten tracks, with 10,000 points per track being marked on the system. So this is going to allow people to track their trip and be able to show off where they have been to friends.
  • The high resolution screen makes it easier for people to see the screen no matter what the lighting conditions hold.
  • If using a rechargeable battery pack, it can be recharged using a USB port.
  • Waterproof up to the IPX-7 standard.
  • Contains a fully topographical map that has the lines of demarcation on it to make it easier for people to see where they are going.

Pros Of The PN-20 Waterproof Hiking GPS

Knowing about the positives of a product before completing the purchase is very important to do. However, what people need to realize is this is more of a challenge than what they expect. With that being said, here are some of the pros that we found with the DeLorme model GPS system and why they are the pros that everyone should be looking for.

  • The ability to cut and transfer the maps to the exact coverage that people want to have. This way people can focus in only on the area they are going to, instead of being stuck looking for the area and finding out that their are five different areas in different parts of the world with the same name.
  • Contains an aerial data pack upgrade that makes it easier for people to mark the trails they are taking, but also makes it easier for people to mark the sightings of features they see along the trails to ensure people are getting the right notation.
  • Sometimes people will want to have the aerial imagery that they have seen used in the past on some of the different views than what people expect. This way people can have a feel for the actual landscape as to where they are, but also get to see some of the features that are around them that they may not see because of the thickness of the woods.
  • Includes some of the most popular hiking trails already loaded onto the GPS system. This is going to make it easier for people to get the right trails and know they can finally find their way along the trails to get to the areas they want to be at and know they are going to have an easy time in finding their way along the trails since they are already loaded.

Cons Of The DeLorme Earthmate

Sometimes, you will find their are products out their that just may not deserve to have a lot of good information and you need to find their cons. With that being said, everyone will complain at some point about something. The complaining is a common item and that is what makes it so easy for people to learn about the cons of a product before it becomes a major item.

  • One complaint that a user has is the fact that the larger maps, which are not usually detailed anyways, needs to be made more detailed. However, they were complaining mainly about having to use an SD card to load some of the more detailed and graphic intense maps, because the units memory was not large enough to hold it.
  • The learning curve that is present with this unit means you cannot just simply buy it and start it up right out of the box. Instead, you will need to take some time to get the system up and running and learn how to use it perfectly to ensure that it is going to work for you when you need it the most.

Price Factors To Explore

Face it a GPS system is going to be out of date as soon as it ships. So the price factor really is going to depend on several factors. One of those is the availability of updates, but the other is if you are going to enjoy the machine or not. After you take out the learning curve and the potentially slow processor if you have a lot of work going on at once, this is a great item. However, as we were researching to provide you with this article we found that the one place that has a great price on the product is Amazon.

As with any of the products that we review here at Todays Camping Gear, we are going to look at several factors. The main factor that we like with the DeLorme is the fact that it has multiple screen options and can be added onto. The downside is we do not like the fact that a lot of people have complained about the learning curve and having to figure out how to do everything before they head out to the trails so this is not a grab and go model. For the money, though, and the features I would have to say this is one of the better GPS models that we have seen and as long as the support is available for the units it will continue to be a great item for people to use for years to come.
