Discover The Lodge Seasoned Cast Iron  7 Quart Dutch Oven

Cooking over an open fire is a good thing, but sometimes you will find it can be a challenge because not all of your cookware is meant for an open fire. We have found that this is very much the case with a lot of the cookware that we have in our home and that is what some people will take with them to use in the campgrounds to save money. However, if you want to have a great time making your dinner then you should know about the Lodge Seasoned Cast Iron 7 Quart Dutch Oven we are getting ready to review here.

Features Of The Lodge Seasoned Cast Iron 7 Quart Dutch Oven

This is a cast iron dutch oven that is going to come pre-seasoned. By having it already seasoned it is going to be ready to use and you can avoid the headache of having to go and season it yourself. The downside is since it is already seasoned it is going to be difficult for you to figure out what exactly you are going to do with the dutch oven once it arrives and that can be interesting at the same time though, because it allows you to have a more versatile cooking.

When you are using the Dutch Oven you may ask yourself, especially if you are going to use this at home as well, if it is safe in the oven. That is the best part about cast iron is the fact that it is very safe in the oven and you can use it in the oven in temperatures up to five hundred degrees. This in turn will make it quite a bit safer for you to use and not have to be concerned about the Dutch Oven causing you any type of problems.

Now this is a Dutch Oven that does have a self basting lid. If you are not familiar with that term it is the type of lid that is going to lock down and hold the moisture in. Now this does not mean that some moisture will not get out, but it will keep most of the moisture in and reflect it back down onto the meat, soup, or other dish that you are cooking. This in turn makes it easier for you to have the cooking going as a meal that you can set and almost forget about.

How Heavy Is The Cast Iron Dutch Oven By Lodge?

For a lot of people they are thinking the cast iron cookware is going to be lightweight like they are used to having for the things they are usually working with. However, you need to realize this is solid iron and that means it is going to be quite a bit heavier than what you would expect. This is a Dutch Oven that will come in weighing at just over 18 pounds, so make sure you are ready to carry that much weight and remember you are most likely going to need to hold it away from your body to ensure that you do not burn yourself.

How Difficult Is It To Re-season The Dutch Oven

Now this is a question that can be hard to answer because each person will have a different level of what they consider difficult. With this Dutch Oven, once you have washed it with soap and water with a stiff brush you will be able to get it reseasoned. To do this you apply a thin layer of melted vegetable shortening to the inside and outside of the dutch oven. You will then want to have a sheet of foil on the bottom shelf of your oven and then the dutch oven positioned above the foil. After you have done this you will need to have the oven at 350 degrees for at least an hour with the dutch oven inside of it. Once the hour is done of it cooking in the oven at temperature you will turn the oven off and allow it to cool completely. Then you will need to store the Dutch Oven uncovered in a dry place to avoid any rust.

What Type Of Utensils Should I Use In The Dutch Oven?

This is a very good question because it is definitely one that you will want to have the answer to because it can be very difficult to fix if the cast iron gets a scratch on it. Since this is the case we recommend that you find a good set of [popup_product]wooden cooking utensils [/popup_product]to use in the Dutch Oven. You can also use the silicone utensils, but we are partial to wood because that is what we have always used and found that the silicone can start to flex quite a bit if it gets to hot.

Our Final Thoughts On The Lodge Pro-Logic Seasoned 7 Quart Dutch Oven

Cast iron cookware is easily one of the best routes to take if you are planning on cooking and camping at the same time. With the cast iron you can put it on the fire and use it, but at the same time know that your food is going to cook properly and evenly. Since that is the case we will say we really like the dutch oven here because it allows for a lot of cooking to be done in a single space, saving on dishes and number of pans you would have to bring with you. The downside that we have is because this is a cast iron piece it will be heavy to lift and that can make it difficult for some people to move. Overall, though, if you can lift the piece easily we highly recommend you consider it as a piece that can be handled for all of your campfire cooking needs.
