Five Best Hatchets For Camping

Camping Axe in woodGoing camping is very exciting, but having the smell of the smoke from the campfire really helps to make the trip worthwhile. With this being the case, you should know more about the fact that you may end up having to cut your own firewood at times. Since this is the case, you need to know that you may need to have a camp axe with you to cut the wood. Some people will even call this a camping hatchet that you can add to your camping gear. To help you make your decision easier we are going to go through and rank what we feel are the five best hatchets for camping and this will help you in finding the right hatchet to use when you go camping.

How Did I Narrow Down My List

I have to admit this list was actually a little bit harder than I expected it to be as it seems that you can turn around and sneeze and find a hatchet. Since that is the case, we decided to look at the hatchets based off of the buyers guide that we published a couple of weeks ago. So that is the basis that we used for the way we narrowed down our list here and this will make it quite a bit easier for you to see the way we narrowed down the list.

5. Gerber Pack Hatchet Camping Axe

This is a great hatcher that is a little bit on the smaller side, but it is one that does have a decent sized head to it. What is really nice is this is one axe that does have a full tang, which allows you to have a better grip on the hatchet when you are using it. The tang is actually more of a padding over molded, which will make it easier for you to hold onto. As a drawback, I have seen the molded units start to have some stresses that can serve as a fracture later on and this can break, but it does take time and abuse.

If you are concerned about the head being unprotected when you are hiking, you can rest easier as you do have a sheath that will cover this up and it can be mounted onto your belt or pack. If you do not want to mount the sheath, then you will like the fact that you are able to find the hatchet does have a lanyard support, which makes it easier for you to secure it to your belt.

4. Promithi Camping Axe

This hatchet is more like a combination tool that you can use. As it does have a sharp pointed pick at one end and the other has the normal head you would expect to see with a hatchet that you would be using to cut up some firewood. Now, this is also a decorative piece that does have a wolfs head on the head as a decoration, no guarantee on how long it will last as it will wear off I am sure.

The overall length of the hatchet comes in at 13 inches, which is a decent length. The weight can feel like it is a little bit on the heavy side as it comes in at 6 pounds, which if you are hiking could feel like a ton. The grip on the handle is a wood that is sanded down, but I will tell you that this does make it a little bit nice for a grip and make sure you have the lanyard ran through the eyelet at the bottom and it will be quite a bit easier for you to grip and if you do slip can hold onto it.

3. IUNIO Camping Axe Multi-Tool

This is one tool that I was not sure if it would make the cut or not. However, it did and I have to say I am surprised at what all it offers. This is a great tool that has a lot of options that you can use as well. The tool is going to be one that you are going to help you in getting the best use out of a single tool. Most of the time, this is going to be from the extensions that you are going to have available for the axe, but it is definitely something that you are going to really enjoy because it does have so many options for you to use.

The Axe head is made from a very hard steel that will make it quite a bit easier for you to get the cutting done and know the material is going to last you for a long time. The downside is the handle is a thick aluminum alloy, which is a nice feature, but it is definitely one that is going to call some doubt into how well the handle will hold up to some of the abuse that you are going to have when you are using the hatchet on a regular basis.

2. Estwing Sportsman Axe

Estwing is a great hatchet that you can trust here as it is going to be coming in at 14 inches long. However, the hatchet is one that is made in a single forge. Since this is a single forge it will allow you to have a stronger hatchet compared to what you will find with some of the other hatchets that are on the market. In addition to this having a single piece forging it is going to have a great quality that you can enjoy as well with the sheath that is a ballistic nylon that will keep you safe from cutting yourself.

Now, unlike some of the other hatchets, we have talked about this is one that does not have a lanyard spot. However, the handle is a leather-wrapped that is going to make it easier for you to hold onto the handle and keep it swinging for a longer period of time and know it will actually work for your needs.

1. Gransfors Bruk Wildlife Hatchet

The look of this hatchet is definitely one that you are going to really look at because it is going to allow you to have a traditional looking hatchet you are going to like. That comes from the fact that this hatchet is going to be around 13.50 inches long, but unlike the other hatchet that landed up in the list at a lower rank at 6 pounds, this is one that will actually be a little bit lighter as it weighs only 1.5 pounds. Some of that weight comes from the fact the handle is wooden and that is a great feature. What is even better is you have the traditonal sheath that you can use as well that is leather. Towards the bottom of the hatchet in the handle you will have a small hole drilled in which allows you to have a lanyard attached.

How To Pick The Camping Hatchet For You

I have to admit you will want to find the one that is best for your hand and the job you are doing. Any of the list that we have here will do the job, but it really depends on what you are looking for and what will work best for your hand. By getting this information it will be very easy for you to find the best camping hatchet for your camping gear from the five best hatchets for camping out of our list.
